Southern Writer's Conference April 15-17
Charles Frazier, author of the best-selling novel Cold Mountain will be
among the writers participating in this year's Southern Literature
Conference April 15-17.
        Frazier will receive the Special Achievement award from the
Fellowship of Southern Writers on Friday, April 16, and will participate in
the conference panel discussion "Fact or Fiction:  Defining the Boundaries
in Historical Writing,"  Sat. April 17 at the Tivoli Theatre from 9:45
a.m.-10:45 a.m..  He will be available to sign copies of his book
afterwards.
        Panel discussions and book signings scheduled throughout the
three-day event allow those attending to meet and talk with their favorite
writers and gain insight on various topics of discussion.  Other conference
highlights include the Livingood Lecture, which will delivered by Wilma
Dykeman on "The Many Voices of History;" a performance by  Chattanooga
Sings!; a film presentation of "Tell Abut the South," and discussion with
producer, director, writer Ross Spears; a reading by retired English
professor Arlie Herron honoring Eudora Welty on her 90th birthday; and a
music presentation by musician Norman Blake.  Margaret Edson will deliver a
reading of her award-winning play, Wit.
        Academy Award winning screenwriter Horton Foote will deliver the
keynote address on Aug. 16 at the fellowship's convocation and awards
ceremony.  In addition to Frazier, this year's fellowship award winners are
Shelby Foote, Barry Hannah, Bobbie Ann Mason, Michael Knight, Margaret
Edson, T. R. Hummer and James Everett Kibler.
        The biennial conference is presented by the Arts and Education
Council with support from a number of sponsors, including UTC.   Panel
discussions and lectures take place at UTC's Fine Arts Center and at the
Tivoli Theatre.  Registration is required.  For a complete schedule, more
