Dear Colleague;

I have noticed some reporting of grades that deviates from University
policy. Specifically, there have been irregularities in requests to change a
posted grade and issuing an incomplete grade. According to section 5.3 of
the Faculty Handbook, once a grade has been posted it can be changed only if
there has been a computational error in determining the grade. The policy
specifically prohibits allowing students to redo work, provide additional
work, or similarly amend their performance after the end of the semester.
According to the Course Catalog, students should receive an "I" for a course
only if their performance in the course has been of passing quality and they
have a valid reason for not completing a course requirement by the end of
the semester.

I ask that you recognize that the Records Office staff has the charge to
implement faculty-approved grading policies and does not have the authority
grant exceptions to these rules, no matter how compelling the case. Such
authority, rightly so, is the prerogative of the various faculty committees.

Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
