Dear Colleagues and UHON Students,

I am pleased to announce this year's selected participants for the UHON Student Assistant Program. They are (in no particular order):

Sarah Grigsby, who will work for Professor Alan White, Art, preparing exhibition publicity and digital imagery for the Cress Gallery.

Rob Craven, who will assist Professor Jonathan McNair, Music, in preparing a digital inventory of the University's collection of Music CDs.

Brandon Whaley, who will help Professor Jane Fife, English, design a web site in connection with Writing Across the Curriculum at UTC.

Jason Camp, who will assist Professor Joe Wilferth, English, with research connected to the publication of a new textbook on composition and rhetoric.

Cassandra Knox, who will assist Professor Betsy Darkin, Math, with copy editing and research related to a new math textbook for grade school teachers.

Amy Moore, who will help Professor J. R. Clark, the Probasco Chair, with a variety of clerical work and report writing.

Meredith Jagger, who will help Professor David Sachsman, Communication, interview leading US journalists for a research project on environmental reporting.

Sonja Petrovic, who will do some computer software analysis and programming for Professors Joe Dumas and Andy Novobilski, Computer Science.

Robert Trail, who will assist Professor Yeou-Fang Hsieh, Mechanical Engineering, with some laboratory maintenance related to research on synthetic ulnae.

Jessica Dillard, who will assist Professor Jane Reagor, Human Ecology, with digital presentations and web site design for classes on Interior Design.

Barbara Elwood, who will assist Professor Holly Dieken, Human Ecology, with her research into corporate health and nutrition programs.

Jessica Dye, who will do some Internet research and word processing for Professor Teresa Norris, Occupational Therapy.

Taylor Loy, will prepare research questionnaires for Professor Paul Watson, Psychology, who is working on several projects on the psychology of religion.

Because of some carry-over funds from last year, the UHON Program is pleased to be able to fund 13 projects this year, up from ten the previous year. This is a good thing considering the demand for student help this year; we received no fewer than thirty-six proposals, nearly all of them involving interesting projects.

To select which students would work for which faculty, the UHON staff posted all of the applications and allowed the honors students to indicate their preferences. The staff then took into consideration such factors as student seniority and preparation, specific faculty preferences, and our feelings for which students would benefit the most from which faculty. We also considered how committed the students seemed to certain projects and whether or not they were already over-scheduled. Naturally, we tried to disperse the awards across the variety of disciplines.

I want to thank the faculty who went to the trouble of submitting applications. If you submitted an application and yet were not assigned an assistant, you should know that this in no way poorly reflects on your proposal or work; it just means the students preferred to work in other areas. Assuming the program is funded again next year, I hope you will resubmit applications not filled this year.

Students who received assignments: congratulations! Your first step is to see Melissa Burchfield to get your paperwork started and to receive from her a calendar indicating when to submit the logs of your work hours. Next, you need to connect with your faculty director. Please do so as soon as possible, since several of the faculty indicated a need for immediate help. Be sure to have your faculty director sign your logs before you submit them to Ms Burchfield for processing. The pay is $10 an hour for up to 100 hours per term.
