BOOKS & COFFEE: A MONTHLY REVIEW OF BOOKS

This year's third meeting of Books & Coffee, a forum for public discussion,
will be held on Tuesday, November 4, at 7:30 PM at the Chattanooga Theatre
Center, which is at 400 River Street, just off Frazier Avenue, on the
northeast corner of Coolidge Park.

We will be joined by Lucien Ellington of UTC, who will speak on Diane
Ravitch's stimulating and controversial new book, THE LANGUAGE POLICE: HOW
PRESSURE GROUPS RESTRICT WHAT STUDENTS LEARN. Ravitch's book argues that
organized pressure groups from the political right and left have effectively
eviscerated the nation's textbooks and standardized exams, sacrificing
historical accuracy, literary quality, and substantive content for the sake
of political and social inoffensiveness---to the detriment of our schools
and our society. The book has been enthusiastically acclaimed by
publications running the gamut from The Wall Street Journal to Mother Jones.

A specialist in Asian studies and editor of the influential journal
Education about Asia, Lucien Ellington teaches in the College of Education
and Applied Professional Studies at UTC. He is coauthor of a new book called
WHERE DID SOCIAL STUDIES GO WRONG?, copies of which will be available at his
talk.

Books & Coffee Schedule for the remainder of 2003:
We will be taking the month of December off. But will be back on January 13,
2004 with a special B&C featuring a presentation by Miles Hoffman, a
commentator on NPR's popular classical music program Performance Today, and
the author of THE NPR CLASSICAL MUSIC COMPANION. Miles Hoffman is an
accomplished musician himself, but he writes about music with unusual
clarity, humor, and grace, and his book is a highly readable reference
geared for the "ordinary listener." More on this event later.
