"Vote early and often" is the first slogan of machine politics. And the
second is like unto it: when you lose on the first vote, call another
vote and do it again.

As a phased-out retiree, I have no vote in Tuesday's election, but I have
kept up with this issues, and I have some perspective of this institution
of higher yearning, beginning in 1967. That perspective suggests that
whenever those here who support Knoxville's bidding pull out the old
chestnut of UTC autonomy to justify their position, faculty members and
those authentically interested in autonomy had best guard their wallets
and tenure.

With those words, I pledge to sink back into the obscurity that my career
so richly deserves.

For what it's worth.
