I believe a great topic would be the history, social and political, of the Middle East since 1900 (at least). Americans, especially our students, need a more in-depth understanding of the context of what is going on now. Not slanted in one direction or the other, just basic information for critically thinking about Western/Mid-eastern culture and its relation to current events. Separate lectures on religion, political history, current views in the Mid-east toward what's going on, ways of understanding the culture. Might break up the "black and white" way we view them and fits into our multi-cultural emphasis quite well.
