As the second speaker in our spring Lupton Globalization Lecture Series,
Professor James Watson of Harvard University will speak at 7:00 P.M. in the
Raccoon Mountain Room of the UC Center on Monday, February 16th. This event
is open to the campus and public, and is sponsored by the History
Department and the Lupton Renaissance Fund.
His topic will be "Is Big Mac the Big Threat? McDonald's and the Cultural
Imperialism Debate." I have heard Prof. Watson speak, and he is a dynamic
speaker. The lecture will be accompanied with slides.
Watson is the author of Golden Arches East, a book that he and his former
students have written on how American fast food has changed the values and
life of Asia. McDonalds, often seen as an agent of American imperialism,
has changed ideas of behavior, public space, and birthdays in unanticipated
ways.
Please announce to students where appropriate.
