Dear Faculty and Professional Staff,

Below is the announcement I sent last week regarding a discussion/resource group being put together by the Counseling and Career Planning Center. This is a reminder for those who made a "mental note" to attend but didn't "check" his/her notes later and for those who may not have received or read the first announcement. We would love to see you there tomorrow.

Thanks,

Ed

ANNOUNCEMENT

Teaching and Managing Challeging Students

Faculty/Staff Group for Resources and Support

I would like to invite all faculty, instructors, and professional staff to come to an initial meeting to discuss the feasibility of establishing an ongoing discussion group for those of you with students who are especially challenging due to emotional adjustment, personal problems, or other outside issues. I have often been impressed with the interesting discussion and valuable information-sharing when faculty and professional staff get together informally in relatively "freestyle" discussion.

Perhaps you have a bright student who has shown a dramatic turnaround for the worse, a student who is overly argumentative or sensitive, a shy student whose work is suffering, or any other factor or set of factors that you believe you could use some consultation from colleagues. Or maybe you just have a student who has opened up individually to you about problems in his/her life, and you feel at a loss as to how respond.

In this day and time, higher education is taking on an increasingly diverse population, oftentimes accompanied by increasingly diverse problems in the classroom. We are having to retool and rethink, making an already complicated profession even more difficult. Experienced faculty with tried and true techniques and new faculty with fresh perspectives are both invited.

Counseling Center staff might be able to lend some knowledge and tips, but what I have in mind is a very self-directed group. Early on we can set the parameters of its format (didactic, interactional, or whatever), based on the needs and opinions of all members.

The first meeting will be next Wed. (2/25) at 3:00pm in the Counseling and Career Planning Center Conference Room (Rm. 334 University Center). RSVP would be helpful but not necessary. Location and times can be changed or added if it is determined to be more convenient for those participating, so if you are interested in this activity but the time doesn't fit your schedule, please call or email.

I hope you will seriously consider working this into your schedule and joining us next Wednesday.

Thanks,

Ed
