To Faculty and Staff,
Dan Quarles has informed me that he intends to retire as Acting Associate
Provost for Academic Administration at the end of this semester. Dan has
served in this position for almost three years, dating back to when John
Trimpey was Acting Provost. His contribution to Academic Affairs and to the
entire university has been immeasurable. He has been a reliable, dedicated
colleague whose integrity has been a source of inspiration to me and to
many others. Most of all, he has been a good friend. I will miss him.
Fortunately, Dan has agreed to stay on the job for a few months to help
orient his successor. I am pleased to announce that David Pittenger will be
taking Dan's place as Acting Associate Provost. David is presently serving
as Head of the Department of Psychology. He will bring to the position not
only his experience in academic administration, but his skills in budgeting
and more generally in quantitative methods. David will work part-time with
Dan through the rest of the semester and then will take over on a full-time
basis in May.
Please join me in expressing our gratitude to Dan for his service to UTC,
and in welcoming David to his new role.
