Diver Presumed Drowned

September 7, 2003

By KOMO Staff & News Services

PIERCE COUNTY - A 24-year-old diving student from Seattle was missing and presumed dead after an accident in the deep waters of Commencement Bay.

The man's name was not released Sunday. His body had not been recovered.

The man went on a training certification dive with another student and an instructor in 210 feet of water Saturday night, said Det. Ed Troyer of the Pierce County sheriff's department.

Only two of the three surfaced, Troyer said. "I don't think they realized they left him behind," he said.

A Tacoma Fire Department fireboat and King County helicopter were used to search the surface Saturday night. Troyer said a Pierce County dive and rescue team did not enter the waters because of the dangerous conditions - extremely deep water and a steep dropoff.
