Bob, this is what the viruses (virii?) do. They send
out e-mail to addresses in your e-mail address book,
and attach themselves. They also usually pose as being
sent by somebody else, again using an address from the
book.

So the likely course here is that somebody with BOTH
the scuba-L e-mail address and Nick's e-mail address
has a virus. The headers could be examined in detail
to confirm this. Not defending the other issues you
addressed, but it is very likely that the e-mail did
not originate with Nick or his wife.

I occasionally get e-mails from a postmaster type
address telling me that an e-mail from
[log in to unmask] could not be delivered. Of
course I send no such e-mail, my address was either
forged by a virus or more likely a spammer.

Cheers,
David H.
