Do it!  I've just got back to soggy Britain from my own c*reer suicide, and
already making plans for the next one. :-)

Unfortunately, as mentioned, there are lots of other people wanting to do
the same thing in these places.  You may, with persistence, and being in
the right place at the right time, get DM work for food and lodging, which
makes the money you have go further, but doesn't add more to the coffers.
But that shouldn't stop you trying.

You'll have a better chance of getting to do a bit of diving for free (or
at least for less than a paying customer) - for example, on the GBR
liveaboard a few of us did recently, there was a travelling DM on the boat,
who was helping out with menial things, changing o-rings, making coffee
etc - in exchange for getting to do some of the dives.
