The story I heard was that when Alaska was statehood back in the 1950s, the
Texans protested because they would no longer be the largest state in the
union.  So of course, the Alaskans said that if Texas didn't like being 2nd,
they would be perfectly happy to split Alaska right down the middle.  That
way Texas could be 3rd :-)

Here's a statistic for you:  According to State Dept of Tourism, Alaska has
33,904 miles of ocean shoreline.  The estimated tidal shoreline, including
islands, inlets and shoreline to head of tidewater, is 47,300 miles.

That is longer that the ocean shorelines of Mexico, Brazil, South Africa,
Norway, and Australia COMBINED.

We haven't run out of places to dive quite yet ;-)
