There's what is right and then there's what is.  I'm with Bjorn on this one.
The job of airport security is hard enough without us making it harder.
Personally, I'd rather check what is being enforced, whether it's strictly
according to the rules or a bit beyond, and comply when doing so is not real
difficult.   I'll save my arguments for something more important, like
whether my notebook computer gets checked or flies with me.

FWIW, I carry a computer everywhere I go.  It's essential to my work.  Quite
often, security personnel apologize for a delay involved in checking out my
pager, phone, Palm or computer because the xray didn't make them comfortable
enough.  My standard response is, "Please don't apologize to me.  I
appreciate your effort.  After all, I'm the one that's getting on the
plane."
