>Worth putting up. The Fundamentals book has it like this:

>A. Swimming
>Minimum : swim 400 meters continuously
>Medium: swim 1600 meters continuously
>Advanced: swim 5000 meters continuously
Well I know I can do 1600m easily, but I'm buggered if I actually want to
try 5km 'cos it's so bloody boring, but I really don't think it would be a
problem. I might just go and do it this week as I've got the next seven
days off!

>B. Jogging
>Minimum: Run 30 minutes continuously
>Medium: Run 60 minutes continuously
>Advanced: Run 26.2 miles (a marathon)
Can't stand jogging as A) It's bloody boring & B) Makes my shins & knees
hurt. But then again, I don't do a lot of jogging underwater.

>C. Biking
>Minimum: Ride 45 minutes continuously
>Medium: Ride 3 hours continuously
>Advanced: Ride 100 miles (a century)
Biking is to me a bit less boring than swimming & jogging, & I know I can
do 3hrs no problem, but again I'm buggered if I actually want to cycle a
hundred miles.

>D. Jumping rope
>Minimum: Jump 5 minutes continuously
>Medium: Jump 15 minutes continuously
>Advanced: Jump 45 minutes continuously
Not sure what is meant by 'jumping rope'. If that is skipping, then it
really depends on what style is performed. As I don't skip I've no idea
what I could achieve (in the UK 'skipping' is regarded as a bit of a girly
thing, like 'rounders'....I think the 'merkins call that baseball :-)

>Elsewhere in the book, there is a discussion of physical fitness for
>the technical diver. Basically says that a technical diver should:
>1) have a body weight in proportion to height, sex and build, with
>percentage of body fat below that of typical recreational diver (?);
Well that's pretty relative innit ? And doesn't everybody know someone who
'carries a bit of excess weight' but is incredibly fit? Some people are
just built different. Look at the average Rugby team!

>2) do minimum of 20 minutes aerobic exercise at least three days a
>week, preferably 30 minutes;
I greatly exceed this, normally do 45mins-1hr at a heart beat rate of about
150 on the cross trainer before a workout; every day except when I am on
day shift.

>3) be non-smoker and not engage in substance abuse;
Hmmmmmmm, ho hum, la de dah....
Actually, I also believe that smokers can be fit; that's not to deny it is
bad for you though, and I personally believe it should be banned outright.
My Father in Law is a classic example, he used to run numerous marathons
(did Berlin 6 times, normally stopping at about six pubs en-route & still
finishing with very respectable times), boxed for the army (3 para),
sparred with Henry Cooper, passed special services entry (that's the one
where potential entrants regulary die), marine entry (thought it was a
doddle), tabbed across the Falklands & thought the marines were wimps 'cos
they couldn't keep up & was a smoker all the time. Now if you wanted to
tell him he was unfit you'd likely get yer bonce boxed off to prove a point
!

>4) be able to answer every question on the RSTC Medical history/exam
>form with an unqualified "no" or have a signed physician's approval
>based on a physical within past 12 months based on RSTC/UHMS
>guidelines. (I don't know what these acronyms are.)
http://www.americandivecenter.com/deep/offline/d151b.htm - it's the basic
medical questionnaire for diving.

Ah to be young again...44 next month, but I wil be in Mauritius to
celebrate it :-)
