Interesting theories and methods of empirical discoveries snipped.

That's basically Rich Pyle's Step 2:

Only comments, from a perspective probably NEVER written by anyone
before. :-) I am going to relate my "deep BOUNCE dives" to Rich
Pyle's steps of "deep safety stops" above (in his article).

This is a VERY UNUSUAL comparison, bearing in mind:

RF> I DON'T DO any decompression dives! Yeah, yeah, I know every
dive is a decompression dive. What I mean is no matter how
deep I BOUNCE, my dives remains NDL (no REQUIRED decompression)
except on rare occasions of a minute or two REQUIRED, which
would be satisfied by the 15-ft "safety stop".

This is because, by choice, I DON'T DO any OW dives in a overhead
environment. A decompression dive can be considered an "overhead
environment" where the overhead is the "glass ceiling" at which one
is REQUIRED to stop.

RP> I would consider 2 hours at 300 feet a "short" bottom time

:-)

The only thing Pyle and I REMOTELY have in common is:

RP> Back before the concept of "technical diving" existed, I used
RP> to do more dives to depths of 180-220 feet than I care to remember.

I've done PLENTY of dives to 180-220 feet (though probably a fraction
of Pyle's number). :-) But my bottom time as MAX is usually a
minute or so whereas Pyle's are in HOURS.

My BOUNCE dives (in Cozumel say) are "typically" a quick drop to the
max (at 180-199 fsw range, sometimes into the 200-250 range bending
my ORCA nondecompression computer. :-) Then I quickly ascend to the
"deep dive" depth of the group on the first of two-tanks, and stay
with the group the rest of the dive.

Let's see how my BOUNCE profile (to 190 fsw say) fit Pyle's steps
(see above). I have NOT read Pyle's steps until NOW. :-)

2). The REQUIRED stop is a ZERO ft. So the first deep stop is
at (190 + 0)/2 or 95 fsw. That's about where the max of
the first-tank is. I usually stay there much longer than
2-3 minutes (as prescribed by Pyle).

4). Since the midpoint between this first stop and the REQUIRED
stop (zero) is 47.5 fsw, and it's greater than 30', my 2nd
"deep stop" would be around 50 fsw, where is usually where
the 1st dive is about to finish, near the ledge of the wall
and divers begin their slow ascent to surface. Invariably
I do this 2nd "deep safety stop". :-)

5) Repeat as necessary. (50 + 0)/2 = 25 fsw, which is LESS
than 30 ft. So, no more deep stop is 'necessary'. :-) On
with the the "required safety stop" at 15 fsw.

I followed Kuty's and Pyle's "deep stop" methods (with EXTRA
"intermediate stops" in between religiously in my DEEP BOUNCE
dives, without ever having heard of their methods!

No wonder I feel soooooooo good and un-fatigued after everyone of
my deep bounce dives. And discussants on LISTS and newsgroups
used to flame me mercilessly for these "deep air" dives. :-)
To their credit, they've given up on me. <BG>

Coincidentally, in my latest trip to Coz, diving with Crusty for
three days, with the exception of ONE dive (to 99 fsw on Crusty's
first dive there), my first dives ranged in MAX between 180 fsw
(with Crusty as SOB :-)) and 224 fsw (looking for a gold chain I
planted at that depth on the site being dived, a year ago, on my
1,000th dive in Cozumel). :-)

All of my dives were NDL (according to ORCA), but one of them
bent the UWATEC because of its silent-bubble-tweak (crap <BG>).

All of my deep bounces followed Rich Pyles "deep stop" steps, in
retrospect! :-)

Happy Bouncing. I don't dive deep at all! :-)
