"DIR" is the acronym for 'Doing It Right'. It is an acronym coined by
members of a prominent group in the cave diving fraternity - the WKPP
(Woodville Karst Plains Project) - and refers *primarily* to a functional
and simplistic style of equipment configuration.

Previously known as the 'Hogarthian' system - named after Bill Hogarth Main,
a noted cave explorer - and since refined, 'DIR' is a term that excites
strong opinions. (For a detailed explanation check out:
http://www.gue.com/equipment/jj-hogarth.html

As you learn more about the system, you'll perhaps begin to appreciate that
there are two types of 'DIR' divers: Those who believe that the DIR system
will make them better divers; and those who believe that equipment
configuration alone is only one part of the equation and that mental
attitude, knowledge, training and physical ability is equally important!
