I do that also. But if you consult  US dictionaries, most will claim that
that is a 'chiefly Brit. var of check'. I guess banks just like more
'traditional' spellings. 

And no selfrespecting (TM) German Tennis 'Club' would ever call itself a
'Klub', either. Klub is for soccer or boxing.

And as I've probably said before, dictionaries are not in the 'defining'
business.
