Luxfer was, and probably still is the largest manufacturer of SCUBA tanks in
the world. While I'm not sure how many 6351-T6 tanks are still in use, I
would venture to guess that a total recall of all made of this alloy would
mark the end of Luxfer as a viable business. At the very least, it would
severly damage them financially. I don't think I've ever seen a company
voluntarily recall something that would bankrupt them.
Personally, I fault them for not providing free testing and replacing all
tanks that fail the test, which they helped develop, at their own expense.
That would allow them to spread the cost out over a longer perior and might
just meet everyone's needs. I also fault the "self regulated" SCUBA
industry for not taking a stand to require this and DOT for not forcing the
issue.
