I did some of that when I first started diving through a local dive
shop, searching for the bodies of drowning victims in some of the local
lakes with 'hand in front of your face mask' visibility.  Chuck can
verify the vis in mud holes like beautiful Lake Dallas.  Back then I'd
do anything for a free tank of air and any excuse to dive...even search
for bodies.  The trick was to volunteer for the outer most part of the
search grid and carefully search one square meter of empty sand and keep
searching that same place until someone else found the 'sinker' (yuck!)
