Saturday May 11
Shelly Beach
Sydney, Australia
10am
Time UW 60-73 minutes
Water Temp. 20C
Viz....are you kidding!!
I'll keep this brief.
What were we thinking!!!! After a week of torrential rain and
big seas, Julian, Jonathon, and myself were the only takers for
the Saturday dip at Shelly.
Conditions look pretty good on the surface but below was another
matter.
Water temperature noticeably cooler now as we head towards the
Aussie winter. Put the jacket on for the first time this season
and it was a good thing too!
Viz varied from about 3 meters to maybe 9 or so. It was pretty
hazy and the bottom very stirred up from last weeks big seas.
We worked out a couple of game plans in case the viz went all to
hell.
We went out slowly and poked around the rocks looking for little
critters. A solid ground swell was running and we were getting
pushed around a fair bit. The ol' torch came in mighty handy.
The resident Blue Groupers followed us around pretty much most
of the dive, poking their heads in the nooks and crannies along
side us. Jonathon located a pretty big Octopus under a ledge and
we stopped to watch for about 5 minutes.
After 30 minutes of poking around, we turned around and headed
back in. Julian and Jonathon had a ton of air left, so I parted
and headed into the beach, whilst they swam over to the
sea-grass beds to hunt for Seahorses, but with little luck.
Coffee and Caramel Tim-Tams (yeah....we ate last weeks's stash)
afterwards and a bit of a chat.
Not an outstanding dive but enjoyable enough anyway.
Cheers
Bird
