In light of recent incidents, I've hesitated in mentioning this, but I've
just returned from picking up a former East-German O2 rebreather. It's in
excellent condition. I can't say that I'm altogether happy with the
canister - a sealed one-time-only use unit - but a bit of re-plumbing should
sort that problem out!

Although it's only intended as an 'exhibit' for my diving museum (garage!),
I'm going to get it overhauled and restored to working condition by one of
the 'breather boffins from the Navy. We'll then give it a couple of dips
under tightly controlled conditions before permanently retiring it from any
active use.

It's a very compact, utilitarian design and even includes a half-mask
complete with spider strap. I can't help but feel sorry for the guys who
actually used the things. It's not exactly the best O2 'breather design
I've ever seen!
