KEY LARGO, FL - A 57-year old Nebraska man died Saturday morning after scuba
diving in about 30 feet of water near Elbow Reef.
Witnesses said Byron Gene Schultz, of Elkhorn, collapsed while climbing back
into a dive boat just after surfacing near the wreck City of Washington, a
popular shallow water dive site.
After removing his dive equipment, Schultz fell backward in the water and
stopped breathing. Witnesses quickly pulled him out and performed CPR but
could not revive him. Schultz was on the Cheeca View dive boat, operated by
Horizon divers of Key Largo.
Detectives with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office took Schultz's dive gear
into custody for routine examination. An autopsy is scheduled.
