Connecting to the University Network
August 9, 2004

Connecting to the Dorm Network is changing!

Here's what students need to know:

Starting on August 9th, 2004, students will be required to validate and
authenticate access to the university network. This means that in order
to log-in, the computer will need to be set up correctly. A UTCID and
password will be required. You can access your UTCID by going to
perfigoweb.utc.edu and clicking forgot password. In order to install
this new system, there will be no Internet connectivity for the dorm
network between the hours of 8:00AM and 12:00 noon on Monday, August 9,
2004.

Students will not be able to access the network until they have
"authenticated" (or told the network who they are). The process will
succeed if you follow this 4 step process.

1) Open an Internet browser window. This will direct you to the
registration page. Have your UTCID and password ready. If you have
forgotten it you can get it by going to perfigoweb.utc.edu and click on
the "Forgot Password" link.

2) Once your UTCID and password have been entered, you will be
prompted to download and install the validation client called
SmartEnforcer. Do so as you can not proceed unless you install this
client.

3) Install Norton Antivirus software available from the web site.

4) If you have any problems with installation or registration please
call the helpdesk at 425-2678.

After the process is complete, you will be logged into the network and
will keep access for 5 days. If the computer is shut down for more than
10 minutes, you will be required to log back in to regain university
network access. This new security system will have the computer icon
called SmartEnforcer that will be located in their system tray (this is
the area located next to the computer clock). To login and logout, you
will right-click with your mouse on that icon for complete menu items.
If validation fails, you will be redirected to remediation sites.
Please note that you must have Norton Antivirus downloaded, installed
and running on your computer. Users must keep up with any and all
security patches and Windows Updates. This will help keep your computer
free of worms, harmful viruses and spyware.

If necessary the computer helpdesk can help you install SmartEnforcer.
The system will be installed during the day from 8:00 am until 12:00
noon, on Monday, August 9th and there will be no internet connectivity
for the dorm network during this time. Please call before visiting the
helpdesk. Many times, the helpdesk will be able to walk you through
the process over the phone.

Why the Change?
This new security system will keep your computers, both laptop and
desktop, much more secure. Last fall, the campus was hit by a major
virus that resulted in a wide-spread network outage. This is a solution
to help prevent such attacks, and is intended to deny "infected"
computers access to the network. We hope this will result in a clean
and consistent network at our university.
