To improve network security and maintain network operation for all
campus users the following are particularly important requirements
and obligations, some of which are new this Fall. There are other
obligations required under the UTC Acceptable Use Practices, for
details see http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/AUP/

* All computer users on the UTC Network are required to use
smtp.utc.edu as their outgoing mail server, to ensure that all mail
leaving campus has been scanned for viruses and for security.

* Use of Blubster and KaZaA super nodes are a violation of the UTC
AUP as these programs blatant disregard for network resources is not
acceptable on the university network. Other file-sharing applications
such as Morpheus, Gnutella, etc. may also create security risks and
unacceptable congestion on the network.

* Any violation of copyright ownership or other illegal activity is
not permitted. UTC has received multiple copyright complaints from
multiple organizations. Do not share files that belong to another.

* Use of scanning tools, port mapping tools, or similar tools is not permitted.

* Use of a computer infected by a virus or otherwise compromised is
not permitted. Maintain anti-virus protection on your computer and do
not open e-mail attachments unless you are expecting them.

* Keep you computer updated and patched. Visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ weekly and install all CRITICAL
updates. If you use another operating system, install the vendor's
security patches at least weekly.

* Use of unauthorized servers (providing services to other computers)
across the Internet is not permitted.

Any UTC Network user (student, faculty, or staff) is subject to loss
of network access until these requirements are met.

Many of these violations are detected by the automatic network
monitoring and are disconnected from the network by shutting off the
computer network jack. The connection will not be restored until the
violation is removed and is certified by the Help Desk. Due to the
volume of disconnects it may take several days to reestablish the
network connection after the violation is removed and certified.

If you have any questions on how to use smtp.utc.edu or how to remove
Blubster, or other file sharing technologies, or if you cannot
disinfect your computer yourself, please contact the UTC HelpDesk at
425-2678 or email [log in to unmask]
