Starting August 12, 2004, connecting to the UTC Dorm Network is
changing!

To install the new system, there will be no Internet or campus network
access from the dorms between 8:00AM and 12:00 noon on Thursday, August
12, 2004.

After that, the new process to connect will require you to follow 4
steps:

1)  Open an Internet browser window.  Any Internet location you enter
will direct you to the UTC Dorm Network Perfigo registration page.
Have your UTCID and password ready.  If you have forgotten it, you can
get it by clicking on the "Forgot Password" link.

2)  Once your UTCID and password have been entered, you will be
prompted to download and install the validation client called
SmartEnforcer.  You can not proceed unless you install this client.

3)  Once the SmartEnforcer has been installed, the client will popup
and request that you enter your username and password once again.

4)  If you don't have Norton Antivirus, please install Norton Antivirus
software from the web site.  You will be prompted to install it if
Norton Antivirus is not detected.

5)  If you have any problems with installation or registration please
call the helpdesk at 425-2678.

After the process is complete, you will be logged into the University
network. Each time you start your computer and connect, and from time
to time, you will be required to first login, by entering your UTCID
and Password, to regain University network access.

After the installation steps above, to login and log out of the
University network, look for the the icon called SmartEnforcer located
in the system tray (this is the area located next to the computer
clock). To login and log out, you right-click with your mouse on that
icon and pick the appropriate choice.

If SmartEnforcer validation of your computer fails, you will be
redirected to a site to help you correct the problem.

Please note the following:

* You must have Norton Antivirus downloaded, installed and running on
your computer.

* You must keep up with any and all security patches and Microsoft
Windows Updates.

These steps will help keep your computer free of worms, harmful viruses
and spyware.

If necessary, the computer helpdesk (425-2678) can help you install
SmartEnforcer. This new system will be installed during the day from
8:00 am until 12:00 noon, on Thursday, August 12th and there will be no
internet connectivity for the dorm network during this time.  Please
call before visiting the helpdesk.  Many times the helpdesk will be
able to walk you through the process over the phone.

Why the Change?
This new security system will keep your computers, both laptop and
desktop, much more secure. Last fall the campus was hit by a major
virus outbreak that resulted in wide-spread network outages. This new
system is a solution to help prevent such attacks and it is intended to
deny "infected" computers access to the network. We expect this system
will result in a clean and consistent network at our University.
