This is a reminder that the UTC Information Technology Coordinating
Council bans from the campus network file sharing technologies that are
primarily used for illegal copying of music, movies, and software. These
technologies are banned from the main campus network, campus housing
network, and campus wireless networks.
If allowed, file sharing technologies would take up a very large share
of the Internet capacity available on campus and thus cause the Internet
to be slow for everyone. They are also primarily used for illegal
copying of copyrighted materials, which is a violation of the UTC
Acceptable Use Practices, see: http://resnet.utc.edu/Dorms/aupoverview.php.
File sharing technologies are also a source of viruses, spyware, and
other infections on your computer. Practice safe computing, see:
http://resnet.utc.edu/Dorms/staysafe.php
More information on file sharing can be seen at:
http://www.campusdownloading.com/
WARNING: Computers that are discovered using such programs (like kazaa,
gnutella, etc.) will be automatically penalized by having NO access to
the Internet (off campus) for several hours. The penalty may be
automatically repeated until the banned file sharing program is stopped
and repeated offenses may result in loss of all network access.
See http://resnet.utc.edu/Dorms/contact.php for how to contact the
Information Technology Division for help on removal of these programs or
other problems using the campus network.
Please practice safe computing. We hope you have a good semester at UTC.
Thank you, UTC IT Coordinating Council
