Students invited to join UTC On the Move
Thanks to all who came out this week to support our first 2000 step
noon walks. Remember we will continue to offer guided 2000 step walks
each weekday for the next 2 weeks, so please consider joining us. We
will leave each day promptly at 12:10 from the new covered entrance of
the UC (beside Maclellan Gym). We have four courses marked off with
different pace and intensity levels to accommodate individual
preferences. Copies of the course maps are available so you can walk
on your own at different times if the noon hour isn't a convenient time
for your schedule.

We hope to see you at noon each day for the next two weeks that your
schedule permits, and that you will encourage your fellow students to
join us.

UTC's Washington Center Internship & Academic Credit Program
Spring 2005 Application Deadline: Monday, November 1
Don't miss the November 1st application deadline for Spring 2005
internships with UTC's Washington Center Internship Program. As you
may already know, this is an exciting opportunity for students (any
major with at least a 3.0 GPA and sophomore status) to get academic
credit and obtain major-related internships in Washington, D.C. through
the Washington Center Program. Over the past couple of semesters, UTC
has helped fund this experience for a few, selected students.
Additional scholarships also are available through The Washington
Center and some of the internship employers.
Internship placements are made in various fields within private,
public, and nonprofit sectors. There are numerous internship
employers; some examples include: The Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Education,
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Amnesty International,
The Washington Times, The White House Media Affairs Office, U.S.
Department of Justice, The Environmental Protection Agency, Washington
law offices, Congressional offices, and foreign embassies. In
addition, the program provides all participants with unique
opportunities to visit foreign embassies as well as attend a
congressional breakfast series (with current Congressmen and
Congresswomen) and a presidential lecture series (with international,
national and local leaders).
If you need more information, please contact the UTC Office of
Cooperative Education by phone (at 425-4735), in person (326 University
Center), or by e-mail (to [log in to unmask]) prior to the November

Music Department celebrates Latin American music
In celebration of Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) the UTC Department of
Music will present a Faculty Concert featuring pianist Sin-Hsing Tsai.
Dr.Tsai will perform a captivating recital of music by Latin American
composers from the 19th and 20th centuries, on Saturday, October 9 at
8:00 p.m. in the Roland Hayes concert hall. The program includes works
by Argentinian composers Julián Aguirre, Alberto Ginastera, and Carlos
Guastavino; Heitor
Villa-Lobos from Brazil; Amadeo Roldán from Cuba; and Carlos Chávez
from Mexico. These colorful and imaginative composers range in style
from
Romantic, to nationalistic utilizing folk music and dance idioms, to
modern. One of the works on the program, Ginastera's Sonata, is a
favorite
selection for international piano competitions. Admission to the
concert is free, and the facility is wheelchair accessible.
Dr. Tsai has concertized in Asia, Europe, North and South America, and
has collaborated with many prominent musicians on both sides of the
Atlantic.
She has participated in several music festivals in the States and
abroad, and has premiered works by composers from Taiwan, Iran,
Germany, France,
England, and Cuba. Her excellence as a pianist has been recognized with
Performance Awards, a Gold Medal, and other honors.
Dr. Tsai has lived and studied in four countries: Taiwan, Argentina,
Germany, and the United States, and speaks four languages. With so many
positive experiences in so many places around the world, she feels a
tremendous responsibility for preserving the identity of different
cultures and presenting their rich heritage to a wider public.
The entire Chattanooga community is invited to this marvelous
opportunity to hear some wonderful music.

There will be a Sacred Harp instruction class on November 14, at 2 PM
in Room 310 of Cadek Hall. The class is free, and all are welcome.
Sacred
Harp singing is 'a capella' and is sung from a special hymn book which
uses shaped notes. You do not need to know how to read music. Sacred
Harp was featured recently in the movie 'Cold Mountain'. If you want
to know more about the music, go to www.fasola.org.

This will not be a regular singing. The participants will learn about
singing the shapes/recognizing the intervals and will work at whatever
pace
is needed. There will be hymnbooks available to use for the class.

If you can't get to this class, there are more scheduled for Jan. 16
and Mar. 13.
