Jeff,

I have 3 units.

I have 1 939/KS100 for the contacts and ledgers, installed new in 1996
to replace a '950, after about 5 years added some more RAM, and after 11
years I've bought a cheap RAID enclosure with 12 9Gb disks. Will be in
production for the foreseeable future.

I have 2 969's one 969KS100/4 and one 969KS120/4 the first installed new
in 97 to replace a 937RX, added a few bit of RAM, Proc's and Jamaica box
disks over the years. The other was purchased in 2002 second hand from
NewCorp in the UK, complete with 4 proc's 1Gb ram, and RAID subsystem,
not needed to add anything to this machine through! Again all will be
in production for the foreseeable future.

I do have all boxes covered by HP for support, but if this finally comes
to an end in 2010 and we don't get a further extension, I'll move them
to Newcorp and carry on, I trust Martin!

I think the problem is the 3000 was too good, no built in obsolescence,
that's why HP killed it, no future revenues outside of support, although
how they can throw away £50k sterling a year for nothing, well maybe a
replacement DAT or 2 a year!

Regards

To all;
Appreciate everyone's response. I wondered if anyone is a aware of a
"rule of thumb" that most would use for the average life that might
be safely expected from a computer system? For instance, how often
should one plan to upgrade your computer systems? Prior to HP
foolish termination of the life of the HP 3000, what had been the
normal practice for upgrading your HP 3000's?
Thanks,
Jeff
