I'm betting most of the software in use fits the category "from a trusted
vendor that will be around for the long haul". HP has closed the road to
any further hauling with the e3000-MPE heavy duty wheel base.

I would think that if the vendor is not around anymore then in reality you
should not be using their software. This would be the case if HP eol's the
life of the 3000 or not. It's a gamble anytime you purchase any third
party
software. The trick to purchasing third party software is to purchase it
from a trusted vendor that will be around for the long haul. This is true
for any system 3000,ux,nt,os390 etc

I think the concern revolves around whether the said third parties will
still be in business or not when the HPSUSAN issue crops up.

I dont know what all the hubbub is all about regarding the HP SUSAN
number. In my many MANY experiences doing disaster recovery of failed
systems I've never had any problems with third party vendors providing
temporary keys to their software. Some vendors will provide you keys
right there on the spot while others (like ROC software) request faxes
or other documentation. All the vendors I have contacted at the time of
DR have been very helpful. After the temp keys have been installed the
vendors have always been very helpful in providing permanent keys if the
HPCPUTYPE or HPSUSAN number has indeed changed. Naturally if the change
put the customer at a different tier level an invoice was quick to
follow.

I really find it amazing how many companies dont have a workable
disaster recovery plan. If you dont, put one together. If you dont
even know where to start, I'll be happy to provide to you my insights
as to how to create a real DR plan that can save your company (and your
job).

I leave you with one simple statement that made HP famous (or infamous
as the case may be).....WHAT IF

Most sensible software vendors have built in their software a "backdoor"
(I don't really like the word ...) that allows a temporary usage of the
product for, say, seven days. This gives ample time to setup a DRP
system and validate the software for good the next morning, or replace a
CPU board, or more. We at APPIC certainly have such a time-buying
facility.
