> * No plans to release an "Open Source" version of MPE

>Good idea. Open-sourcing MPE would reduce its consistency. We don't need a
>Red Hat MPE, a Mandrake MPE, a Turbo MPE, a SuSe MPE, etc. We need an
>OpenMPE. ONE and only ONE.

To me HP/we are losing a opportunity to spread the power of the os etc
through the use of open source. Imagine an OS that does not limit you to any
one single hardware platform. Imagine developing something that will work on
a HP 9000, windows , Apple , IBM , SUN , DEC etc. What a great opportunity
to spread the MPE world. This means you might no longer be restricted to
what software you mix and match with your applications, you would be able to
run your existing OS with home grown platform dependant packages. Obviously
this would be no small task but this is what happened with Linux.

Maybe at the moment we have limited developers available because we live in
the closed world of 3000, but I am sure many people would be willing to get
into the intricacies of the OS if such an opportunity arose.

Other versions of Linux opened up because developers from the main Linus
group wanted to go off and do other developments, like supported business
versions of Linux etc , surely this empowers the O/S and enables it to
evolve into a better system, look at windows , is this the same ? Windows
95, 98 , NT , XP. Whats the difference except they are all under the
Microsoft label ?

Just my Saturday morning thoughts.

Peter
My ideas and only mine :)
