Neil,

Now that I agree with :) If HP gets out of the computer business all
together then this "HP hardware" requirement should be waived.

Thanx,
   Jon

Well then, something that allows continued use when HP abandons all
computing platforms.
Unless the emulator can run on PA-RISC Inkjet cartridges....;)

        Neil,

The planned requirement (as I understand it) would not
stipulate
"Intel platforms", but rather HP (or Compaq) on the box. It's up to
the
emulator vendors to decide what platform(s) they support, i.e.
Windows,
Linux, HP-UX, etc. In theory a vendor could choose to create a
PA-RISC
emulator that runs on IA-64 and then MPE/iX would be on IA-64
(albeit,
        through an emulator).

        Thanx,
                Jon

While I disagree with this restriction, I would suggest that
something will
have to built into the license agreement that allows continued use
of the
emulator on hardware other than HP, when HP terminates Intel
platforms.

HP has a clear history of abandoning hardware platforms.

I'd hate to find myself in the same situation I do now when HP
announces EOL
on all PC/Server hardware in 2006.....

Currently there are two potentual companies interested in
the
        creation of a
PA-RISC emulator, Allegro and SRI. I believe both companies
are on
        the list
and can speak for themselves. I personally found the HP
news on
        this topic to
be positive progress. Naturally the details will determine
just how

positive. One requirement HP is placing on the licensing of
MPE on
        an
emulatored PA-RISC environment is that it must be on HP
hardware. A
        quick
pole of the room on how many people were interested in an
emulator
        showed
roughly 90% - 95% were interested. Then asked how many
would not be

interested if they had to run it on HP hardware less then 5%
lowered
        their
                hands.

                Thanx,
