Martin,

Is this mix based on an assumption that the HP3000 option will
be "unsupported" as of the end of 2006? If that assumption turns out to
be false :), I wonder if the 20% would go up? Have you talked to the
customers about the OpenMPE option (including the concept of an emulator
environment)?

Thanx,
    Jon Backus

Our customer base falls into 3 camps.

20% - There are those who have stated they will remain on the HP3000 as
long as possible .

20% - There are those who are actively looking at other solutions

60% - There are those who want our software ported/moved to another
stable
(non-Windows) environment

There is discussion in the Ecometry-L by some Ecometry shops
that they would prefer to stay with MPE beyond the end of HP support
instead of going to the current HP-UX or WindowsNT options being
presented by Ecometry, Inc.

Thanx,

Additionally, I would be curious to see how many Ecometry shops
would be interested in continuing to work with the MPE/iX operating
system? This solution would need to "assume" a couple of big "ifs":

1) An emulator is created that would allow for the replacement of the
HPe3000 hardware (if or when a company decided to replace it).
2) HP allows for the continued support of the MPE/iX operating system
and sub-systems (Image, TurboStore, etc.), specifically regarding any
potential patches, by somebody else after they stop supporting or
enhancing it.
3) Ecometry, Inc. decided to continue supporting an MPE version of their
software.

Perhaps a list of these companies could be created as well or
maybe a single list with "- Linux" or "- OpenMPE" out next to the
company name.

Thanx,
    Jon Backus

I have heard several people on the list comment on the desire for a
linux solution. The reasons are quite valid.

Maybe we should start a list, put your name and company on the list, if
you would prefer or consider a Linux solution. Simple as that, just add
your name and post to the list. I know that this may generate a lot of
spam, we all know how to use the delete key for that. But the volume of
names may wake some people up.

If no one has checked, there are open-source e-commerce solutions. What
may be required is a co-op of companies to take an existing open-source
code base and convert it into a working solution. It would be a
different approach to software development. But it may also be the
future of software development.

If you are intersted, add your name.
