this is from the yahoo article:

"The result, Sun believes, will be renewed demand for its servers and

services. The company also will charge subscription fees for Solaris
support and service programs that are typically sought by the
businesses and organizations that Sun targets."

under the heading of "there's no such thing as a free lunch" -- sun is
doing the same thing as many of the linux vendors (eg, redhat). get the
os for free, but they'll (hopefully/ideally) recover their costs thru
support dollars.

i don't know if this gamble will work for sun or not....but to address
mpe and openmpe....

my personal opinion is -- we're unlikely to ever see mpe's source code
made available (like was suggested in the yahoo article) for
any/everyone to look at. at this point in time, i don't know that i
really care about this particular aspect since the challenge to convince
hp to release the source code *at all* is far greater and more critical.

that's one issue. just as critical is the user community.

soooooo many mpe shops have quit updating the operating system on mpe
and sooooo many shops have quit paying support on their mpe systems (for
both os and even 3rd-party software) that it creates a completely
unsupportable environment.

with NO dollars going to <whomever> how is mpe going to be supported?

*if* openmpe is going to succeed there HAS TO BE support -- in real and
continuing dollars -- from mpe's users. it's just that simple.

did i mention there was no such thing as a free lunch? - d
