The "anti-priracy" mechanism will be necessary to get the software vendors
to assist the "Emulator Market" ... Most are watching to see what HP has to
say for itself on the rest of the details and arrangements.

No reason to particpate unless thee is a Return on Investment - Gavin will
have to teach us all how to diagnose problems in this environment - we still
have a number of customers using serial connections for devices like weigh
scales ... with no DTCs how will they connect?

My opinion,

Birket

Subject: Re: PA-RISC Emulator - 3rd Party Software

Gavin,

Very well said (as usual) but I would like to focus on this singular
aspect
for a moment (see below). Would you agree that some of the functional
details of the emulator can be hammered out by open discussion? For
example, the format, need, and execution of HPCPUNAME and HPSUSAN. I would
like for some of the 3rd party vendors in the list to join in with their
thoughts on this issue. Historically 3rd party software has used a
combination of this information (and perhaps others) to "lock" a copy of the
software onto a specific box. I'm assuming the 3rd party software vendors
are still interested in this ability but it would be better for them to
confirm it rather then us to assume it. This question is separate from the
issue of "do end users like the practice". Can vendors please join in at
this point on this issue?

Thanx,
        Jon

Good software is rarely defined by committee. A quality HPe3000 Platform
Emulator will only be developed by an individual or a small team of people
working together with adequate funding and lack of outside interference.

If you intend to write an emulator yourself, or wish to produce a
specification and then employ someone to produce it as a work-for-hire then,
by-all-means, use the design process that you feel is best suited to your
needs.
