I looked at the results of the latest survey but I am a bit confused by
the way the results are reported. I can understand the use of
percentages when there is one selection and you can easily tell what
percentage of the people who responded are in favour of a question but I
have a problem with the "select up to 3" questions.
For example, the last question results were posted as :

6. How do you expect to handle THIRD PARTY software failures? (select at
most 3)
37% expect no problems, our 3rd party code is stable
64% rely on each 3rd party to support their products
3% rely on a different vendor to support our 3rd party code
8% self-support, we expect to have the source code for our 3rd party
products
2% rely on HP to support our 3rd party code
23% no formal plan, we will just deal wit it if/when it happens
 6% other

So, 101% expect no problems or rely on 3rd party support...?

This is meaningless to me. How do we know how many people voted for
three items and how many for one?
It would have been better to post the actual numbers of votes for each
item. At least we could see the kind of numbers that are involved.
Apart from that criticism (and half the questions have this strange
reporting method), I am not too surprised by the percentages shown in
the first three questions. It is particularly telling that in spite of
HPs aggressive marketing of the HP-UX migration path, only a quarter of
those that responded to the questionnaire have expressed inclinations in
that direction.

Just my $ .2

Cheers,

John Dunlop
