Subject: [OPENMPE] HP World Announcements

The OpenMPE session, at HP World, was held yesterday (9/25) at 4:00 PM
(PST). There was well over 100 people in the audience and the HP
presentation / discussion consumed the entire two hours. The following is a
brief recap of the announcements that were made by HP.

"PA-RISC Platform Emulator"
* HP will allow emulator(s) to move forward
 - HP will NOT create a PA-RISC emulator.
 - If a PA-RISC emulator or emulators appear is up to the 3rd party
companies
that may choose to do so.
* MPE license transfers and the creation of new licenses will be available
* Fees and the process for licenses are still to be determined

Subject: [OPENMPE] PA-RISC Emulator

Currently there are two potentual companies interested in the creation of
a
PA-RISC emulator, Allegro and SRI. I believe both companies are on the list
and can speak for themselves. I personally found the HP news on this topic
to
be positive progress. Naturally the details will determine just how
positive. One requirement HP is placing on the licensing of MPE on an
emulatored PA-RISC environment is that it must be on HP hardware. A quick
pole of the room on how many people were interested in an emulator showed
roughly 90% - 95% were interested. Then asked how many would not be
interested if they had to run it on HP hardware less then 5% lowered their
hands.

FYI: Status update from one of the PA-RISC emulator companies, forwarded by
permission. This company (Software Resources International, a.k.a. - SRI)
is represented in the group. So, any comments, questions, concerns, or
feedback of any type will go directly to them.

Thanx,
        Jon

Subject: PA-RISC emulator design planning

Jon,

As mentioned a few weeks ago, a short update on our HP3000 plans. After an
internal meeting we have decided to go ahead in principle with the emulator
design. For this purpose we will take up HP on their offer to provide
pointers to documentation and to answer a series of technical questions.

A decision to go ahead with the design is not yet a decision to put a
product on the market, which - in our opinion - is premature. Our experience
with the VAX emulator is that there is no market until sales of new
equipment has stopped for at least a year. This in spite of the very 'vocal'
opinions I have seen in the OpenMPE forum (and also from the similar VAX
community in the past). Also, emulator purchases are driven by corporate
needs, not by individual enthousiasts. The many 'first hour' companies
testing the VAX emulator prototype generated an insignificant % of revenue.

Initially we will focus in R&D on a high performance CPU implementation
(simple interpretation will not work well for a RISC CPU) and a few basic
components so that we can publish a prototype for tests at large. The latter
will not be before summer 2003 though. When we have a more detailed R&D plan
I will update you again.

Best regards, Robert

Allegro has also expressed desire to move forward, in principle with a
PA-RISC hardware emulator. Gavin Scott has been very expressive and helpful
on the list. There are way to many postings to try and recap in a single
email other then to say they are interested if HP comes up with a reasonable
pricing model for MPE licenses.

Thanx,
        Jon
