Interesting thought. Sparks bought its first HP3000 in 1980...a Series III.. We replaced in with a Series 70 in 1987. An in 1989 with a new "MPE/XL" 960. Then in 1996 We upgraded to our 969K220 running MPE/iX. We are still running our 969 today. Our Police Systems which were replaced last year started on two machines, a 58 and a Micro 37 in 1988. We upgraded them over the years and in 1996 we moved them to a single 969k100. That machine was retired last year.

Our "Desktop" notebook strategy the past couple of years has been to replace them every 3 years. Because of budget constraints, we won't be doing that this year...and probably next year also. We probably will be looking at virtual PC's connected to thin clients in the future.

We also had HPUX boxes but my mind has lost their "life' at this point.

I believe the HP3000 969K220 we have now was last rebooted about two years ago so we could upgrade the power and UPS in our server room. No other reason to that I can think of :)

To all;
Appreciate everyone's response. I wondered if anyone is a aware of a
"rule of thumb" that most would use for the average life that might
be safely expected from a computer system? For instance, how often
should one plan to upgrade your computer systems? Prior to HP
foolish termination of the life of the HP 3000, what had been the
normal practice for upgrading your HP 3000's?
Thanks,
Jeff
