Yes, the goal is to be able to run the MPE/iX operating system unchanged
from its current state, potentially copied off of an SLT, FOS and SUBSYS
tape set that exists today.
Once running, you should be able to :RESTORE virtually any MPE application
and have it run without ever knowing that there's no *physical* PA-RISC CPU
or HPe3000 box anywhere in sight.
It's kind of an all-or-nothing deal. If you can run anything then you can
probably run everything.
The issues come up in terms of what emulated hardware devices we do (or
don't) provide (maybe no DTC support, no non-networked printer support, that
sort of thing). Actually DTCs probably work fine if we do the LAN interface
right, but using an unsupported DTC hardware box kind of eliminates some of
the advantage of running on supported hardware. I'll leave the
implementation of a virtual DTC to others :-)
