Hi Tony,

Thanks for the info. It's our production box so I think I'll set up a cron job to monitor things instead.

regards,

Robert W.Mills

On our HPUX boxes, /dev/null is owned by user "bin".

I would check the owner of your /dev/null file - as only the owner or someone with root access can change the permissions.

If it's a development server and the problem keeps happening, you could always enabling file system logging.

Subject: [HP9000-L] /dev/null

Greetings to the -L,

We had a problem with /dev/null on our HP-UX (B.10.20) box over the weekend. It was tracked down to /dev/null having the wrong permissions (600 instead of 666).

Who or what (apart from chmod) would have the ability to change it's permissions?

Coming from an MPE/iX background I assumed that it would have the same protection as you find with $NULL but that does not seem to be the case.

Regards,

Robert W.Mills
