Single user startup up probably uses a different console speed entry
for the baud rate than normal multi-user mode.  (IIRC, look for
what /etc/inittab single user mode points at in /etc/gettydefs or
something like that.  The getty needs to be run at the right baud
rate for the terminal. I may be out of date on the names above and
never did much with HPUX serial connections.)
