Larry asks:

The reason is because the idea of a prison is central to Christian theology.
The word "penitentiary" comes from the Latin "paenitens," meaning to regret,
and implicitly to ask forgiveness. Likewise the word "sentence" comes from the
Latin "sentens", the present participle of "sentire," meaning to "feel," and
implicitly therefore to think, as in a sentiment expressed in a written
sentence.

The word "prison", btw, is simply a shortened version of the root word,
"apprehension," which the Latin root word was "prehendere", to seize. Thus if you
apprehend these few sentiments, the need for a place of penitence becomes clear.
