As long as I'm posting off-topic material, I thought I might as well mention
that electrons are no longer scarce in California. In fact, it's quite the
opposite now. Between the twin processes of people in California taking
conservation really quite seriously and the State of California being able to
sign long-term contracts for power, the State is now buying power at $135 per
megawatt (seven times what they paid for it last year but far below the
maximum of $5200 per megawatt they were paying earlier this year).
Unfortunately, the State has signed up for so much power in these long-term
contracts that they now have a substantial excess every day and are being
forced to sell that excess back onto the spot market for the going rate:
$15/megawatt, losing $120 for every excess megawatt they sell back onto the
grid.
I suspect that the entire energy mess in California has been one giant
conspiracy by Texas Republicans to make Gray Davis, the Democratic governor
of California, look bad.
