Mark was wise enough to select a porting project with very
reasonable size for starting. This seems like a very good idea
in my opinion. Much easier than beginning with something like
AOL Server, for example, where you might face porting issues
in areas like threads or sockets or whatever.
Other examples that come to mind are some of the GNU packages
with tools like find or grep or sed, the IBM jikes compiler
for Java (sourcecode to bytecode), or libjpeg or libtiff for
image processing. Okay, those are already available, but maybe
they give an idea in comparison to PostgreSQL, SAPDB, etc.
Starting with something simple like HelloWorld.c should never
be considered too embarassing when it comes to practising with
a new set of tools for program development (shell, gcc, cvs).
Lars.
