This is probably the culprit. I experienced a similar problem
installing Linux on a server from cds that worked fine on identical
machines. The problem turned out to be a faulty memory chip.
Replacing the memory module resolved the issue. There are intel
based diagnostic boot packages available on the net that allow you
to boot your pc or lt from the cd and run diagnostics independent
of the base os of the system. I use the Linux Ultimate Boot CD
image available for free at http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/. The
memory check software work regardless of OS so these will boot and
run even on a Microsoft box. If you absolutely need to have a
Microsoft version then there is one available on a link from the
site given above but it is a lot of work to assemble. The linux
version is a downloadable ISO image that you just burn to a CD and
go.
