Thanks to everyone for correctly identifying CDC as the 7th of the dwarfs.
Incidentally, the GE-415, on which I cut my teeth, used the 4-character
word (1 character = 6 bits) in those pre-byte days. All COBOL fields had to
begin on a word boundary - if that didn't happen naturally why then you had
to imbed 1, 2 or 3 characters of FILLER in your record to force it. All
this with a 16K mainframe memory which still required "lots" of space for
the OS and other overhead. Ugh!
