It's possible with a tool like MPEX, which doesn't care (sic)
what the file type is, and assumes that *you* know what you're
doing when you purge one of *those* files!
Another way around this is to RESTORE just the datasets that
you need for any particular program, including the root file
(required), the detail(s) accessed, and the masters for the
chain(s) being read. Our operator does this occasionally
when nightly or monthly reports must be re-run from a prior
database. Works fine. Lasts long time. (c) Denys Beauchemin?
But then again, those two 'solutions' don't answer your original
question: 'Is it possible to >programmatically< delete automatic
masters...' Oh well.
