Merced is the name of a river in the Pacific Northwest. Intel has been
using the names of rivers in the PNW as code names for several years now.
 Willamette, Merced, Katmai, Klamath, etc..

It think this is a rip-off of Rolls Royce using the names of English rivers
for their turbojet and turbofan engines, (Welland, Nene, Derwent, Avon
(remember, the Comet?), the Conway, etc. . .)

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

-some RRR for the day-

Naming conventions:

I guess these days it's easier just to remove letters from some existing
name:
Mercedes -> Merced
Titanium -> Itanium
