This Compaq buy of Digital will leave three big
players in the Computer business, IBM, HP and
Compaq for hardware and, of course you have to add
the incipient monopoly - MS - for software (is MS into
hardware, yet?). On this list people ask "How will the
Compaq DEC merger affect HP?" Hopefully, it will make
HP try harder to get its act together when it comes to
responsiveness and marketing.

Then there are also runs like Dell and Gateway pushing
hard, not to mention IBM trying to reinvent itself and
Oracle itching to be a big player. Then you have to
consider the effect of the Internet on all this.

Yes, it will be an interesting time as the millennium
approaches and computers become chips in all devices -
has your watch talked to you recently? Wait its coming.
Does your PC hear you? Already here, but not common
yet. Wait awhile - you'll soon be telling it to turn
on the porch light and answer the door.
