All I can say is good luck in finding a new system manager. You
are very lucky in the fact that the 3000's are very stable
systems.
Assuming you have DBCPLUS:
1. Log into the group and account in which the database resides.
2. :DBCPLUS
3. >OUTPUT LP (this will send the output to a spoolfile. This is
not necessary but it is a good safety).
4. >BASE database (where database is the name of the database in
which you wish to expand a dataset)
5. >CHANGE CAPACITY dataset newcapacity
where dataset is the dataset on which you wish to change the
capacity.
where newcapacity is the amount to which you wish to
increase the dataset.
6. >PERFORM COMMANDS JOB 4
JOB creates a jobstream usually named with the database
name+JJ. (this name is automatically generated)
4 says it is okay to change the database even though a
DBSTORE has not been done.
7. >EXIT
If DBCPLUS ask if you wish to either purge the change file or the
existing job (baseJJ) then answer yes.
Stream this job when NOONE meaning NOONE is accessing the
database.
While it is not necessary, I recommend you do a backup of the
database before you stream the job. As a matter of a fact I
would recommend you do this whole process after a backup but
before you let anyone on the system.
I would also suggest that after you enter DBCPLUS you enter the
command HELP and just keep reading!
As far as to what you should increase the capacity to:
For performance reasons the dataset should remain about 70% full.
Also, it has been suggested that a prime number is also ideal to
use as a dataset capacity.
EXAMPLE:
:DBCPLUS
>OUTPUT LP
>BASE HEALTH
>CHANGE CAPACITY SERVICE 123457
>PERFORM COMMANDS JOB 4
>EXIT
this will create a job called HEALTHJJ which when streamed will
change the capacity of service to 123457.
/ON SOAPBOX
This is the reason I believe every I/S manager should either have
two system administrators or at least have the one sys admin
write everything he/she knows down in a procedure manual. My
boss has had me write everything down and now I can actually
enjoy a vacation without having to worry about the pager going
off!
/OFF SOAPBOX
Good Luck!
P.S. I believe this to be correct but I am posting it to have
other people review it before anyone takes my advice! I can
not/will not guarantee that this will work for everyone/anyone.

WE lost our system manager. I need to know how to expand the datasets;
many are getting close to capacity. The manuals are no help!!!
